Places for Children in the Dordogne & Lot Region

Most attractions within the region have child-friendly facilities, entertainment and displays, but this page lists several additional local attractions that are more child-focused than those listed in the Local Sights and Local Activities pages.

Adventure Parks

There are several excellent adventure parks with the Dordogne & Lot region and close to the gites. Monkey’s Forest is a fantastic children’s adventure park set within a forest, with many tree-top courses and safe zip lines. Also nearby is the Parc-en-Ciel tree-top adventure park, and Cape Nature, which offers tree-climbing, paintball and water activities for family groups.

Zoos and Animal Reserves

Also popular throughout the Dordogne & Lot region are its zoos and animal reserves. La Forêt des Singes (Monkey Zoo) is an attractive forest with around 150 Barbary Macaque monkeys roaming freely throughout 20 hectares; regular feeding talks, guides, and educational videos are provided. Réserve Zoologique de Calviac is a reserve with around 200 animals of 30 different – and many rare – species, including lemurs, wallabies, owls, wolves, marmosets and squirrel monkeys.

In addition to the various zoos and reserves with the Dordogne & Lot region, there is an aquarium, the Aquarium du Périgord Noir, north of the gites on the Dordogne river. The family-friendly attraction has a variety of aquatic life, an alligator park, a reptile park, and various daily shows and displays for children.

Waterparks

In addition to all the local rivers and lakes in which to swim, there are also excellent waterparks within the region. The closest to the gites is Quercyland (named after the Causses Du Quercy Natural Park), which is a family-friendly adventure complex set around a large waterpark with two giant water slides and five solar-heated swimming pools. The complex also has adventure rides, boating and maze.

Medieval Shows

Many of the local medieval castles have excellent displays throughout the summer, including demonstrations of medieval life and combat. There are also dedicated shows, such as the one at Parc Durandal, an excellent medieval-themed equestrian show set around a child-friendly story, with many impressive stunts throughout.

Other Outdoor Activities

There are dozens of other activities that are suitable for children in the Dordogne & Lot region, including kayaking, cycling, horse riding and swimming. Please see our dedicated page for Local Activities for further information.
